Overview

Construction is one of the largest sectors in the UK economy – with a turnover of £386 billion in 2017, contributing £142 billion in value added to the UK economy and employing 3.2 million people (9% of the total UK workforce).

The industry stands on the verge of a digital transformation, opening a great opportunity to boost productivity and deliver a more sustainable built environment. Technology and innovative use of data has a role to play in almost all aspects of construction and the built environment.

The return of people to work on construction sites during the pandemic further highlighted the health and safety of working conditions. Not only must workers be able to carry out work under standard health and safety regulations, there is the added caveat of following social distancing and hygiene measures — putting an even greater focus on health and safety in the construction industry.

Both the Building and Safety Bill and the Construction Leadership Council’s Site Operating Procedures during COVID-19 are positive steps for improving conditions within the industry and pivotal if the world of construction is to move forward positively.

As the Government embarks on a strategy to accelerate infrastructure across the UK and promote a green, clean economic recovery as we start to look beyond coronavirus, join us at the Future of Construction event and learn how together we can improve the industry and its social, environmental and economic impact.

Agenda Content and Learning Outcomes

Construction is a sector where Britain has a strong competitive edge. We have world-class expertise in architecture, design and engineering, and British companies are leading the way in sustainable construction solutions. The construction industry affects everyone, influencing productivity and wellbeing, creating the homes, hospitals, schools, workplaces, and infrastructure essential for a good quality of life.

But it is far more than just an economic driver. As society continues to develop, construction has shaped a built environment that has increasingly influenced how we live, the quality of our lives and the world we live in.

By embracing the real time challenges that lie ahead, there is an opportunity to create a construction ecosystem that delivers a built environment fit for all. Across the two days, delegates will learn how to:

  • Promote industry and Government collaboration to put Britain at the forefront of global construction in the post Covid-19 years.
  • Establish the UK as a leader in delivering infrastructure projects, through the use of digital technologies such as Building Information Modelling
  • Improve the performance of the construction sector through technological advancement and innovation
  • Pull together data into a coherent and easily comprehensible form that would better describe how the wider construction industry is performing
  • Embrace all the aspects of the design and construction process, not just the assembly on site
  • Understand the need for further research into the value generated by construction and the built environment
  • Ensuring that the Construction Sector is able to attract, recruit and retain the skilled workforce it needs both now and in the future
  • Explore current worker safety standards both on-site and in an office based environment
